Painful Rewatches
Hello folks! You all must be wondering, 'What a sudden suppai?! How is this guy back in less than 3 months of uploading a blog?' Well, I'm bored, and also excited for this blog. Again, this one's going to be a list of movies. It's going to be a list of terrific movies, which I don't like watching. These are the movies whose quality is good, but they're painful to (re)watch. In no specific order, here goes:
1. Cars 3
The 2006 Cars movie is in my top 5 favorite movies. It is by no means the greatest movie of all time, no. But my earliest memories of school, friends, and family are all associated with this. I hold it very close to my heart, just like many other 2006-born people. Coming to Cars 2, it's a bad movie for the most parts, but it's fun to watch. You might think I'm crazy, but I love it (only real ones will get the reference). And now, Cars 3. What do I say about this? It's a great farewell film. It's a great coming of (old) age film. It's great in many ways. But McQueen being hopeless and defeated is unwatchable. It's like watching your favorite sportsperson grow old, and not able to play like he did, struggling and receiving flak for not meeting expectations. It's crushing. The scene where one of the cars says, 'Racing wasn't the best part of his life, you were...', is enough to make a grown man cry. Again, it's not a masterpiece by any means, but it knows that it's targeting people like me, who want a closure to Lightning's story.
2. Mahanati
Of course this had to be on the list. I was familiar with names like NTR, ANR, Savitri, Jamuna etc. because my grandparents used to watch these old Telugu movies starring them. They were household names, and I just knew them as actors. So watching the story of a person whom I've been seeing from a young age, and to see them destroy themselves was heart wrenching. Not just for me, no. My family was having a hangover for nearly a week. The movie starts of with sadness, is wholesome till the 1 hour mark, then turns into a romantic drama, then into proper drama mode. Till the final hour. Then Nag Ashwin squeezez every last teardrop, from both left and right eye, mind you. He then ends the movie with a conversation between Savitri and her friend, the latter asking when they would meet the next time. Savitri turns to the camera, smiles, and replies, 'Tomorrow, in the cinema.' Oh and he doesn't leave you yet, even though you're crying. He finishes with an actual voice recording of the legend, and then lets you go. By the time you're home, you've sobbed a month's equivalent of tears. The reason why its painful to rewatch is that nobody is at fault in her story. She married Gemini knowing well that he was already married. You're just pissed at the universe for being so mean.
3. Up
I can watch the full movie many times, but I just cannot watch the first 20-30 minutes of Up. How could that happen to Ellie?! THEY'RE CARL AND ELLIE. Carl is just existing without Ellie. And the music is just like knives stabbing your heart. Pixar really wants the audience to cry, don't they?
4. Toy Story 3
Talking about Pixar making audiences cry, here's something else for you. You wanna know what's the greatest moment in cinematic history? The little jerk from Andy when Bonnie was about to take Woody. I cannot stop raving about it. Andy's reaction is so... I don't know I have no words. How do I describe Andy's state? Well, I guess I can't. But knowing what Woody did to get back to Andy, and then finally seeing that Andy loves Woody the most is the most heartwearming moment ever. Litres of drops were shed when they showed Woody's face after that. No expression, but so emotional. I really want to hate Bonnie, but she's a good kid. She took Woody's hand and waved to Andy. I'm 100% sure Andy cried his eyes out later. Imagine toys actually being alive though. Creepy, yes, but imagine their despair at knowing I don't play with them anymore. Reminder for everyone to check on their toys once in a while. Poor things. Damn, Toy Story really does things to me doesn't it.
5. Taare Zameen Par
This movie was made so it could be on this list. I've watched Taare Zameen Par many times (still don't know why I put myself through that), and every single time, I've cried. Every time. And it's not like this movie is unwatchable because it's sad. It's an extremely rewatchable movie. Except for that painting competition. That darn competition man. Aamir Khan deserves the worst biriyanis for making so many people cry.
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I've watched this movie once, and never planning on a rewatch. This broke me in ways I do not understand. This is one love story that is not a tragedy, but it's not a happy story. It's not an open ending, but it doesn't have a definite finish either. You want to root for Joel and Clementine, but also don't want to because it's better that way. This movie isn't a cry fest, but it definitely gives a heavy hangover.
And that was it! Thanks for reading, and buh-bye!
